In mobile electronics, a tone generator is a diagnostic instrument, not a toy. A clean sine wave test tone tells you things music never will: whether a speaker buzzes at a specific frequency, whether a subwoofer enclosure rattles at 40 Hz, whether an amplifier clips when the gain is set too hot, and whether the left and right channels of a factory harness actually go where the wiring diagram says they do.
Setting amplifier gains
A steady tone at a known frequency — typically 40 Hz or 50 Hz for subwoofer amplifiers and 1 kHz for full-range channels — gives you a stable signal for setting gain with a multimeter or oscilloscope instead of guessing by ear. Play the tone at the head unit's reference volume, measure the amplifier output, and set the gain to hit your target voltage before distortion.
Finding rattles and verifying installs
A frequency sweep from 20 Hz to 20 kHz walks the whole audible spectrum through the vehicle. Panel rattles, loose trim, and enclosure leaks each show up at their own resonant frequency — a sweep finds them in seconds. After an install, a left/right channel test confirms the channels aren't swapped, and a polarity pulse confirms every woofer pushes out on positive, so the system isn't fighting itself in the cabin.
Pink noise for balance
Pink noise carries equal energy per octave, which is close to how humans hear. It's the standard signal for checking speaker balance, fader and crossover behavior across a vehicle — if one side or one driver sounds different on pink noise, something in the chain is different.
